Adult in grass at Ocean Twp Library, May 2, 2010
One of the harbingers of spring in New Jersey, this was the first of the brightly colored sparrows to come to my attention. And, I realize that this is a bird I’ve been too ready to photograph over the years; there are 579 photos in the Chipping Sparrow collection. One reason for this is its pervasiveness, showing up just about anywhere. I’ve photographed them as far afield as Long Island and the Blue Ridge in Virginia. They frequently show up in our front yard and they’re always, in season, at Weltz Park.
